Quick answer

Eyewear must match the wavelength

Laser safety glasses are wavelength specific filters, not general eye protection. A filter that blocks 445 nm blue light is transparent to 10.6 micrometre infrared, so diode glasses give no protection at all against a CO2 machine, and the reverse is equally true.

Fire

Every material a laser cuts can burn, and card, paper and thin veneer ignite fastest. Keep a fire extinguisher within arm reach of the machine and never leave a running laser unattended. Air assist reduces flare ups considerably by blowing out small flames before they establish, but it does not make an unattended machine safe. The fire that matters is the one that starts after a flare up nobody saw.

Resin handling

Uncured resin is a skin sensitiser. Wear nitrile gloves every time, work with ventilation, and keep it off skin entirely rather than washing it off afterwards. Used isopropyl alcohol is not a drain matter: leave it in a clear container under sunlight or a UV lamp until the dissolved resin cures and settles, filter out the solid, cure it hard, and dispose of it as solid waste.

Filament fumes

ABS and ASA emit styrene and ultrafine particles while printing, and several other materials emit VOCs. An enclosure is for print quality, holding chamber heat so corners do not lift, and it concentrates those emissions rather than removing them. Pair it with extraction to outside air or a carbon filter. PLA is the mildest of the common materials, which is one reason it is the right place for a beginner to start.

Common questions

Why is PVC singled out so strongly?

Because the failure is immediate and affects both the operator and the machine. Cutting PVC releases chlorine gas, which combines with moisture to form hydrochloric acid, so it corrodes the metal inside the machine while harming whoever is breathing it. It is also the material people cut by accident most often, since most cheap faux leather and most sign vinyl is PVC without saying so.

Can I use one pair of laser glasses for both machines?

Not unless the glasses are explicitly rated for both wavelengths, and most are not. A diode emits around 445 nm and a CO2 emits 10.6 micrometres, which are so far apart optically that a filter blocking one is transparent to the other. If you run both machines, keep two clearly labelled pairs, each stored with its own machine.

Is an enclosure enough for ABS?

No, and this is the most commonly misunderstood point in 3D printing. An enclosure holds chamber heat, which is what stops ABS warping, but it also concentrates the styrene and ultrafine particles that ABS emits. Opening the door afterwards then releases the lot into the room. You need the enclosure for print quality and extraction or filtration for air quality.

How dangerous is resin really?

The risk is sensitisation rather than acute poisoning. Uncured photopolymer resin is a skin sensitiser, meaning repeated contact can produce a permanent allergic response that develops over months and then does not go away. Nitrile gloves, ventilation and keeping it off skin entirely are what prevent it, and the people who get caught are usually the ones who handled it casually for a long time without incident.
