The machine
Diode laser: A diode emits around 445 nm and cuts wood, leather, card and dark acrylic well. It cannot cut clear acrylic at any power, because the material is transparent at that wavelength, and that is a property of the material rather than a limit of the machine.
Safety, not optional
Laser safety glasses, 445 nm rated: These must match the wavelength of YOUR machine. Glasses for a diode cover roughly 190 to 490 nm and give no protection whatever against a CO2 beam. The glasses supplied with a cheap machine are often unrated, and the damage they fail to prevent is permanent.
Fire extinguisher: Every material a laser cuts can burn, and card and thin wood ignite fastest. Keep it within arm reach of the machine and never leave a running laser unattended, which is the rule that actually prevents the fire.
The bed
Honeycomb bed: It supports the work while letting the beam and the smoke pass through, which stops back reflection scorching the underside of the cut and protects whatever the machine is standing on.
Air quality
Extraction fan: Laser smoke is combustion product and belongs outside. Sizing follows enclosure volume rather than machine wattage, because you are replacing the air fast enough that smoke never accumulates.
Ducting: Four inch duct suits almost every desktop machine. Keep the run short and straight, because each bend costs roughly five feet of equivalent length and flexible duct costs several times what rigid pipe does.
Material
Basswood plywood: Thin basswood is the most forgiving material to learn on and the cheapest to waste. Every settings figure you find online is a starting point that must be tested on an offcut of the same sheet.

- A rotary attachment. It only earns its place once you are engraving tumblers or cylindrical stock, and it is easy to add later.
- Air assist, but only just. It is the first upgrade to make, and if the budget stretches at all, move it out of this list and into the machine order.
- Expensive stock. Learn on basswood and cheap plywood, because the first dozen jobs are experiments.
What to upgrade first
- Air assist, which roughly doubles effective cutting capability on a diode by clearing the kerf between passes. Nothing else comes close for the money.
- A larger honeycomb bed if the first one does not cover the full work area.

Do I need to buy everything at once?
No, and on the laser side you should not spread it out arbitrarily. On a printing bench the machine and one spool get you started and everything else can follow. On a laser bench the eyewear, extraction and fire extinguisher belong in the first order, because leaving them for later means running the machine unprotected.
Why is there a separate ladder for lasers?
Because a 3D printing bench and a laser bench are genuinely different purchases. They share almost no consumables, their failure modes are unrelated, and their safety requirements are not comparable. Forcing both into one beginner to expert ladder would give bad advice to both buyers.
What should I not buy from this list?
