A CO2 laser is not a better diode, it is a different tool. It emits at 10.6 micrometres instead of 445 nanometres, and that single difference is what lets it cut clear acrylic, glass mark, and work faster on thick organic material.
It also brings different hazards. The eyewear from your diode machine offers no protection here, the tube and optics need care, and the machine is heavier and less portable in every sense.

Safety, not optional
CO2 laser safety glasses, 10600 nm rated: THIS IS A DIFFERENT PAIR FROM YOUR DIODE GLASSES. Eyewear rated for 445 nm gives zero protection against a CO2 beam, and eyewear rated for 10600 nm gives zero protection against a diode. If you run both machines you need both pairs, clearly labelled and kept with their machine.
Fire extinguisher: Within arm reach. A CO2 machine cuts faster and deeper, which means more energy into the material and a shorter path from flare up to fire.
Cutting performance
Air assist: Essential on thick stock and deliberately gentle on acrylic. Strong airflow across a molten acrylic edge frosts it and destroys the flame polished finish that is the main reason to cut acrylic on a CO2 machine.
The bed
Honeycomb bed: Supports thin and flexible stock flat, which matters more at this tier because focus tolerance is small and a sheet that bows loses focus mid cut.
Air quality
Fume extractor: Where venting outside is impossible, a multi stage extractor is the fallback. Be clear eyed about it: the carbon loads up and stops working with no warning, so treat the cartridge as a consumable on a real schedule.
Extraction fan: Venting outside beats filtering whenever it is physically possible, and a CO2 machine cutting acrylic produces fumes you do not want recirculated.
Capability
Rotary attachment: Glass and tumbler engraving is a CO2 strength, and the rotary is what makes cylindrical work possible at all.
Material
Cast acrylic sheet: Cast acrylic, not extruded. Cast cuts with a polished edge and engraves white and frosty; extruded melts differently and gives a poorer result on both counts.
Anodised aluminium blanks: Marking anodised aluminium is a reliable earner. A desktop CO2 will not mark bare aluminium without a coating, so anodised stock is the practical route.

Do I need to buy everything at once?

Why is there a separate ladder for lasers?
